& Panama-Pacific Exposition Held in 1915 to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal, the real raison d tre for the festivities was that San Franciscans had resurrected their city after the 1906 disaster (see p94).
There are no real American style malls in San Francisco. The ones that come closest are the San Francisco Shopping Center (see p51) and the Crocker Galleria (see p50). Other centers are in historic structures such as Ghirardelli and The Cannery (see pp12 13), or have architectural originality, such as the Embarcadero Center (see p50) and the Japan Center (see p99). You will find unusual shops in most of them.
